If you want to swim rather than just splash, or have a narrow garden, a rectangular or oval pool is a good choice. Find suitable frame and steel-wall models here.

Advantages over round pools

Rectangular and oval pools make better use of long, narrow plots and offer a longer swimming lane. From about 4 to 5 m in length you can swim a few strokes, and with a counter-current unit you can even train properly. They often look tidier in the garden and fit nicely against patios or house walls.

The downside: for the same water surface they are usually more expensive than round pools, because the straight walls need more support.

Mind the space and supports

Many rectangular frame pools have angled supports or tension straps along the long sides to absorb the water pressure. These extend beyond the actual pool area and need extra space. So check the total footprint in the instructions, not just the pool dimensions. Steel oval pools need side supports or, when sunk, retaining walls.

  • Small rectangular pools (up to approx. 3 m): family splashing, often without supports
  • Medium sizes (3–4.5 m): frame pools with supports, 84–122 cm deep
  • Large pools (5 m and up): swimming and training, usually with a sand filter

What matters when buying

With elongated pools, frame stability is crucial. Compare tube thickness, the number of supports and the quality of the connectors. Also check the filter capacity: larger rectangular pools quickly hold 10,000 to 20,000 litres and need a suitably sized sand filter. A matching cover is often harder to find for rectangular pools than for standard round pools – it's best to buy one that fits at the same time.

Ground preparation and setup

The ground must be level along the entire length. For large pools, a base of compacted sand or fine gravel with a protective fleece is worthwhile; for steel-wall oval pools, often a foundation for the supports. Allow plenty of time and helpers for the setup.

Who an elongated pool suits

A rectangular or oval pool is worthwhile for keen swimmers, families with older children and anyone whose garden is longer than it is wide. For simple splashing with toddlers, an inexpensive round pool is usually the more practical choice.
