A complete set includes the pool, a filter pump and often a ladder, cover and ground sheet. Compare sets here – and find out when the all-in-one package is worth it.

What's in a pool set?

The contents vary widely. Basic sets consist of a pool and a cartridge filter pump. Larger sets also include a safety ladder, ground sheet, cover and sometimes a skimmer, chemical dispenser or maintenance kit. Steel-wall complete sets often come with a sand filter, built-in skimmer and return nozzle.

Read the description carefully: a “set” doesn't always mean everything you need to get started is included. Water care products, a test kit and a skimmer net are almost always missing.

Is the pump right for the pool?

The supplied pump is the most common weak point of cheap sets. Rule of thumb: the pump should be able to circulate the entire pool volume once in about four to six hours. A 10,000-litre pool therefore needs a pump with an effective output of around 2,000 to 2,500 litres per hour. Note that the manufacturer's figure is often the maximum flow rate without filter resistance – in operation it's lower.

  • Cartridge filter: for small to medium pools; clean and replace cartridges regularly
  • Sand filter: for larger pools, backwashable, lower running costs
  • Connection diameter (usually 32 or 38 mm) must match the pool

Set or separate purchase?

A set is convenient and usually cheaper than the individual parts. But if you know you'll want a sand filter in the long run, it can make more sense to buy the pool without a pump and choose a matching filter separately. Ladders in sets are often basic models too – for deeper pools, a sturdy safety ladder with removable steps is worth it.

Tip for getting started

Before filling the pool, connect the pump as a trial and check all the connections. After filling, run the pump for a few hours, measure the pH and disinfectant levels and adjust both. That way you start the season with clear water.

Who a complete set is for

A set is ideal for beginners who want to get started without lengthy research and want the pool and accessories to match. Experienced pool owners who already have a filter system, on the other hand, save money by buying just the pool.
