Frame pools stand on a sturdy steel-tube frame and are the most popular balance of price, stability and easy setup. Compare round and rectangular models here.

How a frame pool is built

In a frame pool, a multi-layer PVC liner hangs in a frame of powder-coated steel tubes. Vertical legs and horizontal crossbars slot together and are secured with pins or clips. The weight of the water tensions the liner and adds stability to the frame. Most models can be assembled by two people in one to three hours.

The best-known ranges come from Intex (Metal Frame, Prism Frame, Ultra XTR) and Bestway (Steel Pro, Steel Pro MAX, Power Steel). Within each range, models differ mainly in frame strength, liner quality and accessories.

Round or rectangular?

Round frame pools are cheaper and offer plenty of water surface for splashing for a given diameter. Rectangular or oval frame pools make better use of narrow gardens and are better suited to swimming a few strokes. However, they often need side supports or tension straps that take up extra space around the pool.

  • Round from 3 m: the classic family pool
  • Rectangular from 4 m: for swimming strokes and narrow plots
  • 76–84 cm high: good for children; 100–132 cm: for adults to swim
  • Rattan, wood or stone look: purely cosmetic, technically identical

What to look for when buying

Check the thickness and coating of the steel tubes, the number of liner layers and what's included. A pool “without accessories” is cheap, but you still need a filter pump, ladder, ground sheet and cover. Sets with a pump are often cheaper than buying separately – but check that the pump output matches the volume. As a rule of thumb, the pump should be able to circulate the entire water volume several times a day. For larger frame pools, a sand filter is usually a better choice than a cartridge filter.

Frame pools in winter

Many manufacturers recommend taking frame pools down in autumn, cleaning and drying them thoroughly and storing them somewhere frost-free. According to their instructions, some larger models may stay up with winterising chemicals and a lowered water level. Always follow the instructions for your model – frost damage to the liner and frame is not covered by the warranty.
